The Smiles Foundation meets again on Tuesday, December 11th 2012, at the popular urban contemporary restaurant, Wynwood Kitchen & Bar from 6:00pm to 9:00 pm to celebrate A Night for Smiles.  The Smiles Foundation’s fourth annual event in Miami promises to raise funds for various foundations in Colombia and Bolivia. The funds collected on this night will be distributed to local organizations to implement effective projects thanks to the help of Conexion Colombia and Bolivia Smiles Foundation. The night’s promise is to deliver gifts to thousands of children in December and in addition, promote education in these rural sectors. Conscience and glamour, under one roof.

The Smiles Foundation is a philanthropic group that seeks to give support, offer economic aid and achieve many smiles.  This year, A Night for Smiles will offer its guests a cocktail reception at Wynwood Kitchen and Bar, located at 2550 N.W. 2nd Avenue, Miami, Florida. The space will offer a unique experience, surrounded by art and a relaxed atmosphere, where guests can enjoy a vast selection of international wines as Marqués de Riscal and Epica, and toast for this wonderful occasion. The magical portion of the night will be the silent auction which will offer unique items of memorable value.  This year, recognized brands such as Silvia Tcherassi, Avianca and Viceroy Hotel, will be donating items and services.

On this edition, Latin stars as Shakira and others, will join the cause by donating to the long and valued list of auction items.  As an added feature, the event will offer a live mystery show, where guests will share the main ingredient of the night, a warm smile.   The realization of this major project would not have been possible without the valuable collaboration of those people who believed in the unlimited smiles that The Smiles Foundation will bring to thousands of children.  Likewise, its production had the valuable support of important allied companies who joined their services for the night’s success.

During Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Miami, I had the honor and pleasure of working with Trendy Studios for the production of Agua Bendita’s Fashion Show.

The electricity, the good one, was perceived instantly from corner to corner the moment you entered the white tent encapsulating the white runway for Agua Bendita’s 2013 collection. Mandrake was able to work backstage prepping video and camera for the show, and we had a glimpse of what is to come in 2013 from this bohemian chic swimwear brand.  With a delightful meeting, followed by an insight interview with Mariana Hinestroza, one of the two designers behind the creative bikini and accessory line, I had the inside scoop of what inspired this new collection, and a first look at the their fashion show lineup.

The collection has prominent Native American/Wild West motif with a twist of metals and blinding brights. “We wanted to showcases the effort, work and honor natives have in their work and struggle for existence.” stated Hinestroza. And I might add, it is quite sexy and fun.

It quickly transformed into a navy and military concept, featuring 1940’s style pinups, shiny army insignias, feminine pink anchors and retro military propagandas images.  Genius!  Masculine, but pretty; Retro but modern.

After the prep, hair and make up, the music went blasting and the catwalk was blinded by international flashes capturing images for mayor press entities who were delighted by this Colombian fashion line.

South America indigenous accessories are little by little, getting fashion recognition. We are talking about pieces that have been fashionable for ages in countries, as Colombia and Brazil, and now they are making fashion statements worldwide. And we love it.

Case in point, the Tagua Nut used for creating rings, bracelets and necklaces are now a source of inspiration by many new designers.  This crazy, chunky and organic nut, found in the Amazon, is molded and dyed to create the perfect tropical vibe.  In addition, you will not only be making a fashion statement by carrying this unique staple, but local artisans are being paid fair wages for creating them.

Another example is the Arhuacos Wayuu Mochila, created only by the Northern pre-columbian Wayuu tribe in Colombia. Each mochila is a unique hand woven bag that tells a story of the artisan who created it.  The production of the bags usually take two to three months as artisans craft each bag to preserve the tradition rather than to make money, therefore they are not mass produced.   For this reasons no two bag are the same.  Now, fashion Mecca J.Crew has finally acknowledged the impeccable craftsmanship found in these bags and launched its own version of the mochila.

I think it is the perfect time to go ethnic!

The Black Book

Thanks to Nina Garcia and her Little Black Book of Style!  Full with tips and tricks, basic insights, inspirations and a trip through time, this book fulfills its promise to provoke the senses by contemplating fashion as part of one’s inner identity.

Quoting fashion icons from Coco Chanel and Audrey Hepburn, to the genius minds of Pablo Picasso and Leonardo Da Vinci, The Little Black Book, makes it entertaining to anyone who might be under the magic spell of fashion.   With contributing fashion anecdotes, amazing illustrations by Ruben Toledo and Q&As from Heidi Klum, Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, and many more, it is surprising that we managed without it!

Great Illustrations

Nina Garcia is to be admired, not only because she is an authority figure in the fashion industry; or because she is the equivalent of Simon Cowell in Project Runaway; or not even because she is from our native hometown Barranquilla, Colombia, but because she makes the most important fashion point finally obvious to everyone!  The latest It Bag should not inspire your personal style, but instead, YOU should be your own fashion!

Building a brand is easy to say but difficult to accomplish.  Mandrake Public Relations, as a full service public relations and marketing firm, has experienced the tenacity one has to possess in order to succeed in this market.  Creating new ventures and possibilities for unknown artists and designers bring many challenges as well as hard work, but the final outcome outweighs anything else.

Case in point, Marl Vilaro Accessories.  Little by little, this young accessories designer, together with Mandrake Public Relations, is creating a brand name in a distant country, one he has yet to visit.  But magically, his name makes way into this constant competitive bazaar of intricate creativity, where every day brings something new to the table.

Marl Vilaro Accessories has much to offer and is in his initial stages of having his official U.S. launch in the United States.  So stay tuned.
